Baby Wilson: 38 Weeks

How far along? 38 weeks
Baby’s size/development this week: weighs 6.8 pounds and measures over 19 1/2 inches long; about the size of a pumpkin. I’ve decided that I need to have lots of pumpkin flavored things to celebrate.
Maternity clothes: wearing them? Yes
Miss anything? Pumpkin beer
Food cravings? None
Anything making you queasy or sick? Just the cologne thing still. Gross.
Sleep: My sleep schedule is pretty sporadic. Some nights I sleep through, other nights I wake up in a pool of sweat (despite our room being freezing), and sometimes I have to get up multiple times to use the bathroom. I can’t complain though, I know this stuff is all pretty normal.
Best moment of the week: Seeing our baby’s face on an ultrasound! (reason for the ultrasound explained below)
Nursery: Things are pretty much complete! The only thing left is to hang the drapes and to purchase the crib. We are waiting on a gift card from my dad before making the purchase. Plus, we have our Pack N Play in our bedroom that the baby will be using for the first few months anyways.
Wedding rings on or off? on
Movement? Stretches, jabs, rolls, all stuff signaling that Baby wants out! :)
Weird pregnancy thing of the week: I had a little incident take place on Saturday. I tripped and fell after going out to breakfast, as my toe got caught on a lip in the curb. I fell to my knees and then fell forward with my arms trying to break my fall. Since my belly is so big at this point, it did hit the ground. I called my doctor right away and headed to the hospital. As I’m so far along, I wasn't sure of the possible scenarios. Soon after I fell, the baby started moving a little bit so I knew that we would be okay. When we got to the hospital, they tested the heart rate and everything was great. I was told I needed to stay for 24 hours for observation.

They needed to do a full ultrasound to make sure that the placenta did not come away from the uterine wall when I fell. The placenta was still in-tact so that was good news. However, we found out that our little nugget went from being head-down to being breech. As I’m currently already effacing and dilating, my doctor doesn't want me to go into labor or have my water break with the baby in the breech position. I have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) to determine the next steps. If Baby is still breech and I’m dilated further than 1cm, we have a c-section scheduled for this Thursday. If I’m still only dilated to 1cm and baby is still breech, we wait a week and give Baby some time to flip. If baby has flipped, we go back to our original scenario.

Long story short, this baby may arrive in just 2 days! Thankfully with my obsessive planning, most things are already ready (especially as far as insurance, HR and all things work related). This wasn't part of our original plan, but the best way you can prepare for a baby is to be flexible. We are excited and about as ready as we can be for little nugget’s arrival, whether it is this week or next…
Daddy is feeling: the need to get lots of things done around the house
Mommy is feeling: excited and nervous
Workouts this week: Walking as usual to and from work during the week. Was pretty much on bed rest while at the hospital on Saturday/Sunday but my doc approved normal activity following my release.
Looking forward to: Finding out next steps at our doctor’s appointment tomorrow!! :)

  1. OMG! Wow! Maybe two days?! Crazy! I am so anxious to hear what you find out tomorrow! I was telling Emily about the breech (er, hope that is okay) and she was telling me that doctors can manually move the baby in to the right position... um, oww?!

So happy you are both okay after the fall!

I am going to have pumpkin things to celebrate Baby W too!

  2. Of course it is okay that you told Emily. :) Yes, we asked our doctor about that but she said that isn't very popular anymore as in most cases the babies go right back to their original position. Plus, the doc is trying to flip the baby, the cord position is unknown and we wouldn't want that to get in the way. I found a midwives suggested position to try and get the baby to flip. We'll see if it works!

Thanks! I was more nervous than anything else right after it happened.

Please eat all the pumpkin things! And text me photos so I can pretend to be enjoying them with you. :)

  3. Sorry to hear the little one is breech! D: There are a couple options to look into - the doctor can perform an external cephalic version (these are...uncomfortable...for you) and look also at spinningbabies.com, there are some inversion tilts that can help baby figure out the right way to turn. I have heard the chiropracter who can do the webster technique can also help. C-sections are no joke and the recovery is hard so hopefully baby can cooperate and you can have a regular birth - but it IS kind of exciting to think of meeting him so soon!

Also, why doesn't the doc want you to labour with baby being breech? Some babies actually flip during labour - I know it depends what kind of breech though, some positions are higher risk for cord prolapse than others.

  4. My doctor suggested the pelvic tilts so I have been doing those. As of this morning, though, Baby seems to be in the same position.

My doctor doesn't want me to go into labor with the baby being breech because of the risk of cord prolapse, as you stated before.

Obviously a c-section is not our ideal situation, but my biggest concern is having this baby born healthy so we will do whatever it takes!

  5. Oh and yes - definitely glad you're okay after the fall! Sorry, was so startled by baby being breech I forgot to mention that! Falls are very scary when pregnant, especially when you hit your belly.

  6. Thanks! Yes, I was more scared than anything else. As soon as the baby moved though, I felt much better. :)

  7. Of course you will, that's because you're going to be a great mama :)

And ah, okay. Must be the kind of breech baby Wilson is =)

If you do end up the c-section route, two things I wish I had known before mine - 1, if you need to move (shift position, sit up, etc) or cough/sneeze/laugh, hold a pillow against your incision - I wish the nurses had told me this trick because it would have saved so much pain! 2, strange as this sounds, hi-cut underwear. I normally wear low cut ones and found out they hit just at my incision, so embarrassingly, had to make my husband run out to buy me new ones after the fact. He still teases me =)

Good luck. So exciting you might meet baby soon!

  8. Whoa! I'm so glad you and Baby W are ok! Sounds so scary to have to stay in the hospital for a day because of simply tripping :( I hope baby flips and everything goes according to plan for you.

And you should go to caribou and get a pumpkin chai latte. It's delicious. I'll go get one to celebrate baby w also :)

  9. Whoa, what a scare! You must have been SO relieved when the baby moved again right away (almost as if to tell you he/she was okay!).

It sounds like your doctor has a plan to make sure that you'll have the safest delivery possible, but being flexible is definitely key! I have a few friends who have ended up with a C-section - I know it's not what anyone really wants, but I'm sure whatever happens will be what's best for you both. Keep us posted if Thursday is the big day!

  10. I was like, "whaaaa? people do that?!" Mind blown. I am not surprised they say NOT to!

I will start with the pumpkin things! I am wearing an orange shirt, if you want to see that. It makes me look like a pumpkin :)

  11. I bet! It's amazing how much we worry about these little ones, they become your world even before they're born :)

And sorry to blather on about breech stuff. It was one of my biggest fears my first pregnancy so I tend to babble before I catch myself. I was so worried going into my checkup yesterday to find my little guy was back to head down that I think I projected - I know you don't need any extra input right now and I apologize!

  12. Thanks for these c-section tips! I will have to pick up a few pairs of the high-cut underwear if that is the route we end up going. :)

  13. Thanks so much! Yes, I'm such a clumsy person too, it would have been too good to be true for me to not trip at all during the pregnancy! Haha

I haven't tried their pumpkin chai latte. I'll have to get one this season. Thanks!

  14. Thanks! It was definitely nerve-wracking waiting for Baby Wilson to move. Right after I fell, I just started sobbing almost right away. Totally normal reaction, right?

I will be sure to announce on my FB page if we have the baby on Thursday! :)

  15. I have them packed in my hospital bag just in case this time, I couldn't believe how much such a small thing added so much ouch factor! :)

  16. No need to apologize, I know you are just trying to be helpful! :) Oh I've been worrying about this little nugget since they day I first realized they existed. Haha. It is funny how that works.

    This.

This will serve you well as a parent!

Thinking good flipping thoughts for you and baby!

  18. Yes, definitely! My general clumsiness is one thing that really scares me about ever being pregnant, so I'd definitely feel that way if I fell!

  19. Thankfully my knees caught the most of it. They are definitely banged up a bit. Rather my knees than the baby, right?!

Baby Wilson may have a career as a tumbler/gymnast or a high diver that does somersaults! Glad to hear that all is well! :)

  21. I'm wishing you the best this week! So glad you and lil' dub weren't hurt in the fall! -gingerfoxxx

  22. I'll keep you and Baby Wilson in my thoughts this week! Fingers crossed that he/she flips around and stays in there a little longer.

And I agree that you need lots of pumpkin things at this time. Heck, at 38 weeks, a glass of pumpkin beer would probably be just fine.

  23. Thanks so much Molly!

Oh pumpkin beer is most definitely on the agenda. It will be purchased on the next grocery store trip, whether Baby Wilson comes on Thursday or not! :)

Thinking of you today!! Silly baby switching to breech. Hopefully he/she will get the memo and flips around -- but if not, everything will work out. I AM glad you're OK from your fall. Yikes!!

  27. Thanks so much Michelle! I'm pretty sure Baby is still breech as of right now. We're about to leave to go to our appointment! :)
