13.1 Half Marathon Giveaway

Last year I wasn't able to run the 13.1 half marathon because I was volunteering for a Ragnar Relay team. This year, I'm also participating in Ragnar so I am unable to run the 13.1 for the 2nd year in a row. However, I've heard good things from my fellow runner friends and I really do hope that conditions are better than last year. (There's no way it can be THAT hot 2 years in a row, right?... RIGHT?)

Here is a little background about the race. This year, it takes place on Saturday, June 8th with a start time of 7am (nice and early for a June race). The course is along the lakefront path, starting and finishing at the South Shore Cultural center. So it at least gives a little bit of a different perspective of the lakefront path than usual.

Also, if you run the 13.1 and the Chicago Half Marathon, you'll complete the Windy City Challenge and receive an additional medal! (A full description of the Windy City Challenge is available on both websites.)

Why am I going on and on about the 13.1? Well, because I have been offered to give away one entry to the event to a lucky reader! 

All you have to do to enter is leave me a comment mentioning a way you keep cool when running on a hot summer day.

Garden hose soak pre run, hand held water bottle filled with ice during (drink half/half on my head), and a cool shower with Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap afterwards (the mint stays on your skin afterwards and feels awesome!!). I sure picked a doozy of a summer to start running again for the first time in years, but this stuff helped me. Successfully trained for my first half marathon ever though! Can't wait for the summer again. This winter stuff is for the birds!

  4. I make sure I stop at as many water fountains as I can and also run as early as I can. I don't mind getting up at 5am during the summer in order to beat the heat.

  5. I moved from DC to Portland, OR to avoid the hot, humid summers!!!! Just kidding (well sort of.....) I try to schedule my runs either early in the morning or late at night when it's not so hot.

  8. I always run with water (even in winter) because there are no water stops/fountains where I usually run. Generally in summer to keep cool I bike instead of run. Probably not the best for training to run a half marathon but I go faster and then I don't even have to carry my own water. Just throw a couple bottles in the cages and go.

  9. I drank lots of water and run either at 5 a.m. in the morning or 7 or 8 p.m. at night after the sun went down. I'm hoping for much cooler weather!

  11. Sweet! I run along the lakefront path and splashing my head, neck, arms with water from the fountains cools down my body a bit. More importantly, I try to run before it gets super hot and sunny or once the sun goes down. Can't wait to hear about Ragnar again, those recaps are always fun to read.

  17. I carry a water bottle that is fresh out of the freezer in my hand. It's my security blanket.

  18. Best way to keep cool is to freeze bandanas or place ice cubes in those expandable waist wallets or wrist bands that have a pocket in them.

  20. I try to run early in the morning before it gets too hot! But, if I can't do that, I just drink lots of water and let myself take walk breaks without feeling guilty :)

  23. Go out early and beat the heat. I also am a big fan of the running skirt for air flow without feeling like I am exposed.

  25. I stay cool by running where there is the most shade. I am lucky enough to live near a lot of lakes and a great breeze usually comes off the lakes. I always carry water with me just incase I need to drink it or pour it on my head. But I would rather be warm then run in the cold. Can't wait for summer!

  26. Starting late or starting early (basically, not running at the hottest time of day), treadmill, and hydration... And paying attention to if my body needs a break :)

  27. How do I stay cool on hot days? I start really early. I am already a 5:30 a.m. starter so I just get it done.

    This is a kick ass giveaway! I feel like saying that I don't need to *try* to stay cool because I'm just so damn cool by default... *AHEM* In reality I just wear very little clothing, run later in the day and have been known to cram fist-fulls of ise down my bra. Just thinking about that makes me appriciate the cooler Spring temps :-)

  30. I bought myself one of those "cooling towels" over the winter... so I haven't used it yet but I'm seriously hoping it helps keep me cool this summer. During marathon training last year, I would stash a small soft cooler at my car and fill it with Ice water and several wet wash cloths. I'd then run out and backs and and use the wash cloths to wipe down my face every 5 miles. It was refreshing!

  31. I dress in light clothes and run early in the morning or later in the day when the sun isn't as bad. Looking forward to spring temps...not so much these brutal summer temps tho

  33. One way I love to stay cool in summer is run by the lake where I can take an after workout splash to cool off. Plus it is always cooler by the lake right?
